Third-year assistant coach Marty McCauley had an immediate positive impact on the program in his first season at Texas Tech. The Red Raiders enjoyed one of the best seasons in school history, highlighted by the program's second trip to the NCAA Championships in five seasons and fifth-consecutive NCAA regional appearance. His influence has also been witnessed in the individual development of several Red Raiders. Oscar Floren earned PING All-America First Team honors in 2006 and honorable mention recognition in 2007, while Andrew Dresser picked up a third-team nod in 2006. Tech was one of only three schools to place multiple players on the three teams. Several talented young golfers have emerged under his tutelage, including Santiago Rivas, Garrett Merrell and Will Griffin. He has also been instrumental in the recruiting of several talented golfers that have chosen Texas Tech. McCauley arrived at Texas Tech after serving as the assistant coach for the Oklahoma City University's men's golf team during the previous two seasons. Highlighting his time with the Stars was the 2004 NAIA National Championship as well as a pair of Sooner Athletic Conference titles. During those two years, the Oklahoma City men's golf program produced eight All-Americans as well as two Academic All-Americans. The team won 13 of its 26 events, finishing with 11 individual medalists. The Stars finished the 2004 season ranked first and third in 2005. Prior to his coaching stint at Oklahoma City University, the Cushing, Okla., native played collegiate golf at Wichita State University from 1999-2002. McCauley helped the Shockers capture a pair of Missouri Valley Conference Championships prior to his graduation in December of 2002. Additionally, he received all-conference academic honors from the MVC during his career. As a prep player at Cushing High School, McCauley finished his career with back-to-back state Class 3A individual titles in 1997 and 1998. He won three district and three regional titles from 1996-98. After titling the state, regional and district events as a senior, McCauley was listed as a Jim Thorpe Award finalist, which is given annually to the top senior athlete in Oklahoma. |
