LUBBOCK, Texas - Freshman Chris Richburg's three RBI and a solid outing by Randy Gattis gave Texas Tech a 9-4 win in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday, but Western Illinois came storming back behind the arm of ace Pat Kohorst to even the series with a 6-1 win.

Tech's loss in the second game dropped the Red Raiders to 6-1 on the young season while Western Illinois improved to 4-3.

Freshman first baseman Chris Richburg gave Tech a huge lift in the first game of the doubleheader when he belted a three-run home run to give the Red Raiders a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth. Richburg finished the game 1-3 with three RBI and that gave him his fifth multiple-RBI game of the season.

The Red Raiders blew open a 5-4 game in the bottom of the eighth as Tech roughed up Western Illinois reliever John Paul Shore with four runs on four hits and took advantage of two walks. Tech's outburst in the eighth gave the Red Raiders a 9-4 win.

Sophomore right-hander Randy Gattis improved to 2-0 on the season as he threw five innings allowing three runs on just one hit. Tim Navin (0-1) took the loss for Western Illinois as he allowed four runs on seven hits over five frames.

Western Illinois starter Pat Kohorst was spectacular in the second game of the doubleheader as he took a six-hit shutout into the ninth inning before being chased away just two outs shy of a complete game. Kohorst moved to 3-0 on the year as he allowed one earned run on eight hits and struckout four.

The Leathernecks scored four runs (three unearned) in the second and third innings off of Tech starter Michael McGowan (0-1), including a two-run homer by Ryan Schmidgall.

Tech's lone run of the game came in the bottom of the ninth when Chris Richburg scored on a fielding error by Kohorst. Richburg led off the frame with a single to left and moved into scoring position on a balk.
